Orbost Probus Club members had a great start with a picnic in the park on Monday, January 13, marking the first activity of fun, friendship and fellowship for 2025.
Orbost Probus would like more people to join.
Members meet on the third Thursday of the month at the Senior Citizens Rooms at 10am.
Following the general meeting they have morning tea and enjoy a guest speaker before finishing at 12pm and go somewhere locally for lunch.
January’s guest speaker was Dave Redden with the topic of ‘The History of Refrigeration’.
Dave was born in Durham, England which is the oldest city in England which produced coal for 150 years until its closure in the 1960s.
The mine was a mile deep and eight miles wide.
Dave became a refrigeration apprentice when he was 16 years of age and progressed to an engineer.
He discussed the hidden industries of refrigeration – mortuaries, science labs, transportation and the never ending list.
They discovered the gases used in the early days of refrigeration were affecting the ozone layer.
Australia is leading the way in converting the old system with the new.
The refrigeration in our supermarkets use up enormous energy. Dave was involved in designing a more efficient system which received an industry design award.
Dave came to Australia in 1991 but chose Orbost when he retired.
“It was a most interesting topic, one we took for granted but one we could not live without,” Orbost Probus Club member, June Manwill said.
