A jam-packed two-day tour of East Gippsland by Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, Governor of Victoria saw her visit some of the region’s key industries, workforce training centres, and cultural landmarks.

East Gippsland Shire mayor, Cr John White joined the Governor on her tour, which included the Gippsland Agricultural Group and its new agricultural centre; TAFE Gippsland’s SEAMEC Campus in Lakes Entrance, Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust, Bairnsdale Neighbourhood House, Krowathunkoolong Keeping Place and St Mary’s Catholic Church.

Reflecting on Governor’s visit, Cr John White spoke about the strength and resilience of the local community and the role of partnerships in addressing regional challenges.

“From fresh produce and seafood to world-class manufacturing, East Gippsland’s industries are the backbone of our economy,” Cr White said.

“We take great pride in supporting our communities, and as a council, we welcomed the opportunity to share our vision of a strong economy for our shire.”

The mayor also shared with the Governor the regional challenges, including infrastructure needs, affordable housing, healthcare and education gaps contributing to skills shortages.

“East Gippsland is responding to the need for stronger disaster-resilience measures and workforce support in new industries following the premature end of our native timber industry,” Cr White said.

On Thursday night, council hosted a civic reception at The Riversleigh Hotel in Bairnsdale, with a focus on bringing together a wide range of industry and community leaders from across the shire.

At the reception, Cr White warmly greeted the Governor and highlighted the significant contributions of local industries such as agriculture, fishing, and manufacturing – with local farm and ocean offerings featured on the night’s menu.

“The evening was very well received by the community and highlighted the value of getting together as a community, networking and sharing ideas. There was some great discussion in the room,” Cr White said.

The Governor praised East Gippsland’s community spirit, noting its strong culture of volunteerism and the way locals quietly support one another without seeking recognition.

The Governor’s visit emphasised the importance of collaboration between local communities, government and industry to foster East Gippsland’s continued growth.

“It has been an honour to have the Governor visit our region and to showcase what makes us proud – our rich history, hardworking people, innovative industries, and exceptional local produce,” Cr White added.

During the visit, the Governor called into Bairnsdale Neighbourhood House and was given a tour by coordinator, Leanne Jennings.
