Orbost sit third on the Gippsland Bowls Region Midweek Pennant division two east ladder after easily eclipsing Howitt Park in round nine, 75-54, last week in Bairnsdale.
Greg Rankin, Robyn Kellow, Des Edwards and Jurgen Fichtner had the largest winning margin, successful 28-12, while Geoff Lynn, Gwen Hatcher, Lynette O’Brien and Trevor Perry were 25-17 winners.
The win moved Orbost up the ladder from fourth to third with five rounds still to go.
In Weekend Pennant, division one had a close but unsuccessful away match against Lakes Entrance 3, going down 55-59, despite winning two of the three rinks.
Ron Hatcher, Maurie Frank, Gwen Hatcher and Bruce Kneebone had a good win, 24-18, while Karen Chenney, Robyn Kellow, Scott Farnell and Lynn had a very close game, winning 18-17.
The loss saw Orbost slip to third on the ladder, they will play a home game against top of the ladder, Lakes Entrance 2 this Saturday.
There was a better result in division four, with the Green Machine defeating Paynesville 4 at home, 37-30.
The game that was severely hampered by lightning and rain, which caused a couple of pauses and an early finish with three ends to go.
Both Orbost teams performed well, the match highlighted by the winning effort of O’Brien, Fichtner, Ralph Harding and Trevor Perry who took their rink 21-10, a result pivotal in the victory.
Orbost remains on top of the ladder, on percent from Tambo Valley, but that will be challenged this week when they pick up no points for a bye.
SOCIAL BOWLS
There was a very good turnout of bowlers last Thursday for social bowls, in what was, for a change, perfect bowling weather.
Two games of 10 ends were played with the winners for the afternoon being Geoffrey Robinson, David Perry, O’Brien and Farnell on a countback.
Despite the much cooler and very windy weather on Sunday, there was a good attendance again.
Two games of 10 ends was again the order of the day, which required a great deal of patience and good humour, as the wind frequently played with the bowls taking them off their intended course.
The winners for the afternoon were Lynn (skip), Vanessa Frank and Trevor Hawkey, who managed a draw and one win from the two games.
The next social bowls will be on Sunday with bowlers required to be at the club no later than 12.30pm.
