Antiques enthusiasts and local history buffs are invited to explore the past as the Orbost Arts Centre hosts its popular annual Beautiful Bygones exhibition, running from August 7 through September 27.
To complement the showcase, the centre will host its featured one-day Antiques Evaluation Day on Sunday, August 9, from 10am to 3pm. The event offers community members a unique chance to bring in family heirlooms, art, books, jewellery, furniture and historical curiosities for professional appraisal.
Two of Australia’s foremost valuation experts, Jon Dwyer and Dennice Collett, will be on hand to provide insights into the craftsmanship, origins and estimated dollar value of submitted pieces.
Jon Dwyer brings extensive experience in Australian and international art, sculpture works on paper, books, furniture, prints, and collectables. Dennice Collett specialises in period furniture, ceramics, silver, Oriental art, Australiana, antiquities and decorative arts.
Community members can bring up to three items for evaluation, ranging from old bottles, coins, and clocks to ornate jewellery, glassware, and functional relics. Organisers note that even those without items to evaluate are welcome to attend, watch the experts at work and hear the stories behind local treasures.
The historical theme extends beyond the main gallery, featuring sculptures and period displays throughout the surrounding parkland, as well as complementary exhibits in the local library and Bark Hut Information Centre. Select items within the exhibition will also be available for purchase.
