Helmets are a must

9 August 2018
in Local News

Since Orbost’s new skate park was officially opened earlier this year the park has been well received and utilised, especially by primary school children on their scooters. But in order for the fun to continue safely, police are urging those on skateboards, scooters and bikes to wear a helmet.

Local police would like to remind everyone having fun at the park that it is a legal requirement to wear a securely fitted, approved helmet when riding bikes and scooter on roads, foot- paths and public reserves.
This includes the skate park.

Flyers have been displayed around town by police and schools have been contacted with articles published in their newsletters to explain the legal requirement to wear helmets while riding bikes and scooters.

“The response has been fantastic and the majority of people are now wearing helmets how- ever the fine for not wearing a securely fitted helmet is now $201,” Senior Constable Jamie Cummings said.

Orbost Rotary Club has thrown its support be- hind getting helmets on the heads of all the youngsters utilising the skate park, and anywhere else in Orbost where they might ride their bikes, scooters and skateboards.

“Orbost Rotary has very generously pledged funding for helmets for anyone in need of one,” Sen Con Cummings said.
Bike helmets can significantly reduce injuries and Orbost Rotary’s assistance in helping that happen is greatly appreciated.
If you or your child cannot access a bike helmet, please contact Sen Con Cummings at the Orbost Police Station.

“Police will be stopping and speaking to children without helmets on and obtaining details in order to send a letter to the parents,” he said.
“If you receive one of these letters from the police please post it on the fridge or another highly visible spot in the house to remind your child that they must wear their helmets when out on their bikes or scooters even if they are, just playing on the footpath out the front.”

Sen Con Cummings said child safety is a priority for parents and assures them that “helmets really do save lives”.
“Please help us by ensuring your child is wearing their helmet whenever they are out on their bikes or scooters,” he said.
