The Far East was a winner in last week’s Victorian State Government Budget, with numerous projects and facilities set for some much-needed upgrades.
Among those was a huge health system boost at Orbost Regional Health, which was allocated $45.4 million to combine the ser-vices of Lochiel House and Waratah Lodge, and to replace 38 aged-care beds.
“I know firsthand how important it is to have peace of mind that your loved ones will be looked after when they’re sick,” Member for Eastern Victoria, Jane Garrett, said.
The tourism sector also received significant funds with $30 million allocated for various projects, including the Croajingolong Wil-derness Coast Walk, which stretches 100km along the far-east coast, and $16.5 million to a number of heritage sites, including Point Hicks Lighthouse.
The Point Hicks Lighthouse and surround-ing area is currently closed as a result of the Black Summer Bushfires and coastal erosion, with accommodation not expected to be re-opened until 2024. However, despite $101 million being allocated to upgrade regional roads, including intersection upgrades, new overtaking lanes and new roundabouts, Orbost and surrounds will see next to no road improvements despite continued calls from local MPs, Darren Chester and Tim Bull.
