The rebuilding process following the Black Summer Bushfires is slow going at Mallacoota.
Of the more than 120 homes destroyed in the fires in the coastal township, less than 25 have been rebuilt or are presently under construction.
Gipsy Point resident and architect, Christy Bryar, who lost her home in the inferno that swept through the area on New Year’s Eve, says there’s been no singular issue but rather a myriad of uncontrollable events.
“It’s been a real melting pot of issues which have created a perfect storm,” she said.
“Initially it was the shire being slow in the process with one thing after another, but then the pandemic hit. We had issues with getting trades, followed by the housing crisis, and then the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“There’s a whole raft of things on governance that are problematic.”
