Sin McGuane, owner of The Vet & Co Orbost, is calling on the Orbost and district community to stay vigilant with their pets’ tick preventative medications following a recent surge in tick paralysis cases.
This alarming increase has been observed over the past few weeks, coinciding with the warmer days, which has encouraged both locals and visitors to explore the scenic bushland areas.
The rise in temperatures is believed to be a contributing factor, as more people and pets spend time outdoors. However, Dr. Sin emphasised the threat of tick paralysis extends beyond outdoor activities.
“Winter is one of the worst times because everyone is bringing in firewood and carrying ticks inside with them,” she explained.
This unexpected indoor risk adds to the urgency of maintaining tick prevention measures year-round.
Tick paralysis occurs when a paralysis tick attaches to an animal and injects toxins into its body.
If not detected and removed promptly, these toxins can lead to severe symptoms including difficulty walking, swallowing and breathing.
In some cases, the condition can be fatal.
Dr. Sin advises pet owners to visit the clinic to discuss the most suitable preventative products for their pets. “An average cost of 30
dollars per month on preventative medication is much cheaper than either losing a much-loved pet or the veterinary expenses the treatment may incur,” she noted.
The Vet & Co Orbost is committed to educating the community on the importance of regular tick prevention.
The clinic staff are ready to assist pet owners in selecting the best products to protect their furry companions from this potentially deadly threat.
