Wind brings trees down

11 September 2019
in Local News

A number of trees were brought down in Mallacoota and Cann River over the weekend after East Gippsland was hit by strong winds.

In the worst incidents two houses were damaged in Mallacoota.

A tree fell into the side of a house early on Sunday morning, causing minor damage, while cladding blew off the side of another dwelling.

Mallacoota SES said they attended about 30 incidents of trees across roads on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Crews were involved in removing several gum trees from the Genoa-Mallacoota Road and another, which was across the road at Double Creek, about six to seven kilometres out of town.

“There was a lot of material down everywhere,” an SES spokesman said.

Crews worked quickly to clear roads so they could be accessible to traffic.

In Cann River, the local SES crew also attended to a number of trees down.

At Club Terrace, the driver of a vehicle who didn’t see a tree was across the road ran into it.

Police attended but said the man managed to free his car before they arrived. A duty forecaster with the Bureau of Meteorology said the winds gusts on Saturday afternoon reached 82kph at one stage, just below the warning threshold of 90kph. Sustained winds were generally around 44kph during the afternoon, escalating to between 50-70kph later in the evening.

Conditions eased overnight.
