Ten tips for tackling tax

Tax time doesn’t have to be a stressful ordeal.
Here are 10 tips to help you lodge your return smoothly:
1. Gather early: Don’t wait until the last minute. Start collecting receipts, invoices, and group certificates (income statements) from employers, banks, and any other institutions you’ve dealt with financially throughout the year.
2. Understand your tax obligations: The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website has a wealth of information to help you understand what you can claim. Familiarise yourself with deductions and offsets that might apply to you.
3. Choose your lodgement method: You can lodge your return online through the ATO’s myGov portal, use a registered tax agent, or complete a paper form. Choose the method that best suits your comfort level and technical expertise.
4. Utilise tax software: Many user-friendly tax software programs can guide you through the filing process and ensure you’re claiming everything you’re entitled to.
5. Keep good records: A good filing system for receipts and documents will save you time and frustration come tax time.
6. Claim work-related expenses: If you work from home or have incurred expenses related to your job, you might be eligible to claim deductions for things like phone calls, internet, or travel.
7. Don’t forget offsets: Offsets can reduce your tax payable. Common offsets include private health insurance, low-income offsets, and offsets for superannuation contributions.
8. Lodge on time: The deadline for lodging your tax return in Australia is usually October 31. Lodging late can incur penalties, so avoid the last-minute scramble.
9. Check for errors: Double-check your return before submitting it to minimize the chance of errors that could delay your refund or create issues with the ATO.
10. Seek help if needed: If you’re unsure about anything or the process seems overwhelming, consider seeking professional help from a registered tax agent who can provide personalised advice.
By following these tips, you can approach tax time with confidence and potentially maximise your tax return. Remember, the ATO website is a valuable resource, so don’t hesitate to explore it for further guidance.
