Snowy West Landcare group has installed a sign documenting the Aboriginal community who lived around Newmerella from the 1890s to the 1970s at Grandview lookout in Newmerella.
The proposal came from a Landcare project on the refurbishing of the Old Coach Road as a walking track and link between the Rail Trail, Grandview Road and the lookout.
The purpose of the sign is to acknowledge the Aboriginal settlement with photos and text so visitors to the lookout can have an understanding of some of the history of the district, in particular Grandview Hill.
Snowy West members have enjoyed the support of Moogji Aboriginal Cooperative and Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation as they worked through various drafts and sought approval for the project.
The sign was sponsored by Snowy West Landcare and the Orbost and District Historical Society.
